Ukraine mourns 30 killed in Kyiv attack; rescuers search rubble

Rescuers were clearing rubble in Kyiv on Friday as flags were lowered to half-mast for a day of mourning following a Russian missile and drone attack that killed at least 30 people and injured 92, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. This strike marks the deadliest on the Ukrainian capital this year, with two children among those still unaccounted for. The attack caused widespread destruction, damaging over 100 residential buildings.

Separately, four people, including a woman and her toddler daughter, were killed overnight in the northern Sumy region by a Russian drone attack, the Prosecutor General's Office reported.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy criticized Russia's continued targeting of residential buildings, stating that President Vladimir Putin intends to 'vanquish' them rather than end the war.

Moscow has claimed its attacks are retaliation for Ukrainian drone strikes deep into Russian territory, which have increasingly targeted energy infrastructure, contributing to a fuel crisis in Russia. Ukraine has intensified its own strikes in response to years of enduring long-range attacks from Russia.
