Ukraine's General Staff reported on August 1 that Russia suffered 42,860 personnel losses in July, marking the highest monthly total for 2026 and the first time this year that monthly losses surpassed 40,000. The cumulative reported Russian losses since February 24, 2022, now exceed 1.4 million.
These figures, which include soldiers killed, wounded, missing, and captured, come as Ukrainian officials express concern over a potential new wave of Russian mobilization. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on July 25, citing intelligence, that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing to expand mobilization efforts. Zelensky also noted that Moscow had enlisted 221,000 people into the Russian military in 2026 while sustaining nearly 225,500 losses, including 131,000 killed and almost 93,000 wounded.
In a separate interview, Zelensky estimated total Russian military casualties at 1.6 million since the invasion began, with approximately 700,000 killed. He also disclosed new estimates for Ukraine, stating around 50,000 Ukrainian service members have been killed and approximately 400,000 wounded.
