- Record-high gasoline and diesel prices in Europe have driven a surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales.
- European EV sales increased by 52.2% in August year-on-year.
- Germany saw a 75% increase in BEV sales in August.
- France's EV sales more than doubled in August.
- Battery-electric cars now hold a 21.7% share of the EU market year-to-date.
- Hybrid-electric cars are the preferred choice in the EU, with a 36.6% market share.
Record-high gasoline and diesel prices across Europe have significantly accelerated the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), with sales surging by 52.2% in August compared to the previous year, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
In Germany, Europe's largest car market, battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales jumped by 75% in August. France also saw its EV sales more than double during the same period. This surge in demand for low-emission vehicles is attributed to drivers seeking alternatives to increasingly expensive fossil fuels, with German gasoline prices hitting an all-time high of 2.31 euros per liter.
Overall new car registrations in the EU increased by 5.3% year-to-date, supported by rising energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Year-to-date, BEVs captured 21.7% of the EU market, up from 15.8% a year prior. Hybrid-electric vehicles remained the preferred choice, holding 36.6% of the market. Conversely, the combined market share of gasoline and diesel cars fell to 29%, down from 37.5% a year ago.
Globally, EV sales have also seen a significant increase this year, influenced by oil supply disruptions and rising fuel costs. Analysts at Wood Mackenzie suggest that this accelerating adoption trend could surpass earlier expectations for EV market share in the global passenger fleet. However, challenges such as the need for substantial investment in battery mineral supply chains and charging infrastructure persist. The ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, which continues to impact global fuel markets, further strengthens the case for increased EV adoption.
