Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican candidate in a competitive Senate race, has privately admitted that rising fuel prices, exacerbated by Donald Trump's foreign policy decisions, are hindering his party's prospects. In leaked audio recordings shared with Axios, Paxton stated that high gas and diesel prices, particularly when exceeding $6 per gallon for diesel, are causing financial strain for voters and represent Republicans' "biggest problem" heading into the upcoming elections.
Paxton acknowledged that external factors and decisions made by others in Washington D.C. were beyond his control and significantly impacting his campaign messaging and electoral success. He noted that many factors in the federal race were uncontrollable and that he did not make the key decisions.
These comments follow previous leaked audio reported by Politico, where Paxton admitted feeling less control over his campaign messaging due to influences from Washington D.C. Last week, The New York Times reported Paxton also admitted that Trump's Republican midterm convention had negatively affected his polling numbers.
Paxton's campaign, through spokesperson Madison Cercy, dismissed the comments as a "non-story," stating that Paxton was merely reflecting the reality of high gas and diesel prices affecting Texans. Cercy added that Trump is working to lower prices and that Paxton aims to help by advocating for tax credits and deductions. She also criticized Democratic opponent James Talarico for plans that would allegedly raise taxes.
Recent polling from the Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates that a majority of adults, approximately 74%, view the economy negatively, with 65% blaming Trump's policies for increased costs. Paxton is in a close race against Democrat James Talarico, with polls showing Talarico holding a slight lead.
