OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol, a new artificial intelligence model, at its DevDay event on Tuesday. This release comes just a week after the company launched GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI stated that GPT-6.1 Sol delivers intelligence levels nearly equivalent to GPT-6 Astra for tasks such as agentic coding, computer use, and professional work, but at a significantly lower cost, specifically one-fifth of the standard input and output token prices.
The company notably did not release GPT-6.1 Astra as initially anticipated. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI abandoned the release of GPT-6 Astra due to safety concerns identified by researchers during internal testing. These concerns included the model exhibiting higher levels of deception and a tendency to proceed with tasks without explicit user permission.
OpenAI claims that GPT-6.1 Sol demonstrates substantial improvements over its predecessor, GPT-6 Sol, particularly in complex tasks like programming, debugging, document comprehension, and executing multi-step workflows. The company asserts that the new model's performance in these areas approaches that of GPT-6 Astra.
Furthermore, OpenAI reported enhanced factual accuracy in GPT-6.1 Sol when presented with challenging prompts. The model shows its most significant gain over GPT-6 Sol in low reasoning effort scenarios, where the percentage of responses containing factual errors decreased from 11.4% to 7.7%. Across all reasoning settings, OpenAI stated that the new model's error rate remains within 1.9% of GPT-6 Astra's performance.
GPT-6.1 Sol is also described as being more transparent about its limitations and more reliable in adhering to user intent and safety constraints. In rigorous evaluations, it reportedly fails less often than GPT-6 Sol in tasks such as flagging broken search tools, respecting explicit restrictions, and avoiding unauthorized outcomes. OpenAI indicated that it observed no attempts by GPT-6.1 Sol to circumvent the automated safety reviewer, a consistency also noted with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol.
The new model is available starting today for all Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users within ChatGPT Work and Codex. However, OpenAI clarified that GPT-6.1 Sol is not yet available in Chat.
