Olivia Colman on viral Wicker memes: 'This has never happened to me before'

The film Wicker, based on Ursula Wills-Jones' short story, tells the tale of a lonely fisherwoman (Colman) who hires a basketmaker (Peter Dinklage) to create a partner out of wicker. Skarsgård portrays this "wicker husband," described as a strapping, dashing life-size piece of furniture who proves to be a devoted partner and passionate lover, sparking jealousy among other village women.

Since the trailer's release, the film has gained traction on platforms like BookTok and FilmTok, with fans swooning over Skarsgård's character. Even brands like Ikea have joined the conversation, posting images of their rattan furniture with the caption "husband material."

Colman said the film's originality drew her to the script, noting that she "really hadn't seen this before." Co-star Elizabeth Debicki agreed that Skarsgård's portrayal was a key factor in the internet's fascination, telling the BBC, "I think it was a lot to do with Alex in a wicker man costume, really."

Skarsgård himself credited the outfit designers for his character's impact and described the sex scenes as "super fun" to shoot, noting their comedic and tender moments. The film also features Elizabeth Debicki as the tailor's wife and Richard E. Grant as the village doctor.

Beyond the viral buzz, the stars highlighted deeper themes in the film, including gender roles and societal structures. Debicki called it "very funny and strange and wonderful, but I find it very moving," encouraging audiences to look beyond the memes. Skarsgård noted it "touches on a lot of stuff. Hierarchy, social structure," but with a "light touch." Colman added that the film "very gently laughs at the sort of traditions we have in marriage and community."

Wicker is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on October 30.
