Northern Ireland allows contentious Orange Order march through Catholic area

Authorities in Northern Ireland have permitted a contentious Protestant parade to pass through a Catholic area for the first time in over two decades, a decision that could reignite sectarian tensions. The Parades Commission on Friday allowed the Orange Order to march along the Garvaghy Road in Portadown on Sunday, a route that has been banned since 1998 due to its association with significant unrest.

The decision comes after the High Court quashed a previous restriction on the parade due to a procedural error, leading the Orange Order to re-apply for a scaled-back march. The commission has stated that conditions will be imposed on the parade, including its size, timing, and music, but not the route itself. The Orange Order has indicated that approximately 60 members will participate without a marching band.

The dispute over the Garvaghy Road march was a focal point of the conflict in Northern Ireland, known as the "Troubles." Annual attempts by the Orange Order to traverse the Catholic enclave triggered widespread unrest before the ban was implemented in 1998, the same year as the Good Friday Agreement. The original ban necessitated a large security operation involving British troops. While the Drumcree parade has passed peacefully since the early 2000s with the ban in place, the reinstatement of the route has been a long-standing demand of pro-British unionist parties who argue it reflects their heritage. However, residents of Garvaghy Road and Irish nationalist politicians have stated that the issue was settled decades ago.
