Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant expansion of the nation's army, increasing its divisions from eight to twelve and authorizing the recruitment of 28,000 new personnel. This strategic move aims to enhance the government's capacity to address ongoing security challenges across the country.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the approved expansion includes the establishment of four new army divisions. The government also committed to increasing investment in military equipment, operational readiness, and troop welfare to modernize the armed forces.
The phased implementation of the expanded 12-division structure will see some divisions become operational by September, followed by another by December. The new formations will cover parts of central, northeastern, and southern Nigeria.
Nigeria is currently grappling with a multitude of security threats, including a 17-year-old Islamist insurgency in the northeast, widespread banditry and kidnappings in the northwest, communal violence in the central region, and separatist agitations in the southeast. The government stated that the new divisions will ensure better co-ordination, intelligence sharing, and faster response times, addressing the current structure where multiple divisions cover extensive areas, stretching resources.
