Nara Organics has initiated a nationwide recall of its organic baby formula, sold through Target stores and online, following a multistate outbreak of infant botulism. Federal authorities confirmed that three infants, aged between 2 and 5 months, fell ill in April and May in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington after consuming Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered infant formula.
These infants were hospitalized and received BabyBIG, an IV medication approved by the FDA for treating infant botulism. Infant botulism is a serious illness affecting babies under one year old, characterized by symptoms such as constipation, poor feeding, muscle weakness, and breathing difficulties, caused by toxin-producing bacteria spores ingested by the infant.
The FDA stated that the recalled formula represents less than 1% of the total infant formula market in the United States, and therefore, the recall is not expected to cause a shortage for parents and caregivers. The CDC has advised individuals with opened cans of the formula to photograph them, record the lot number and use-by date, label them 'DO NOT USE,' and store them safely away from other baby items for at least a month before discarding if no symptoms appear.
