Hanwha Aerospace Co., a defense contractor under the Hanwha Group, announced on Sunday the formation of an independent safety committee. This initiative follows a deadly fire at its factory in Daejeon earlier this month, which resulted in five fatalities and two injuries.
The newly established committee comprises 11 external safety experts tasked with evaluating the company's overall safety conditions and recommending enhancements to the working environment. Additionally, two members proposed by the company's labor union will join the committee.
In response to the incident, Hanwha Aerospace reported a substantial increase in its safety investments. The company allocated 247 billion won (approximately $162 million) in 2025 for safety improvements, a significant rise from 11.4 billion won in the preceding year. Further investment of 452.4 billion won is planned for the current year to bolster workplace safety measures.
