Hong Kong's MTR Corporation said on November 7, 2026 that it had ordered its main contractor, Bouygues-Dragages Joint Venture, to suspend unauthorized remedial works at the under-construction Tung Chung West Station. The corporation said routine inspections in October uncovered incomplete works on platform-level columns where material-filling repairs had been carried out without prior MTR approval, with gaps of up to 30cm to the ceiling.
MTR said it instructed the contractor to stop the process immediately, review completed columns and construction methods on both platform and concourse levels, and insisted the situation does not involve structural safety. A full contractor report and an approved remedial scheme are required before work resumes. Remedial costs will fall on the contractor, and MTR has notified relevant government departments. All corrective steps must meet statutory requirements before final acceptance.
The station forms part of the Tung Chung Line Extension, budgeted at about HK$19.5 billion. Tung Chung West began construction in 2023 using a top-down method, with the main station structure due in the first half of 2027 and passenger service targeted for 2029.
