Met Police should investigate itself over 'Putney Pusher' suspect arrest, watchdog says

Scotland Yard had referred itself to the police watchdog over its contact with Brandram prior to his death. The IOPC, after reviewing the referral, has decided an investigation is required and that the Met's Directorate of Professional Standards should carry it out. The review will examine the necessity and proportionality of the arrest, the nature of any engagement with the media, and whether appropriate consideration was given to Mr Brandram's welfare.

Brandram was arrested in June 2026 in connection with an incident on May 5, 2017, where a jogger pushed a woman into the path of an oncoming bus on Putney Bridge. At the time of his death, he had been released under investigation. His family has maintained his innocence and criticized the Met Police for not clearing his name. An inquest heard that Brandram's death was not considered suspicious and was provisionally attributed to ligature compression of the neck.
