NHS trust apologizes to Noah Woods' family for data breach

The East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust has apologized to the family of Noah Woods after 10 employees accessed the three-year-old's medical records without authorization. The Trust stated that the breach of trust caused "extra anguish" to the family during an "already devastating time."

Dr. Martin Mansfield, the Trust's Deputy Chief Medical Officer, said an urgent internal investigation was launched as soon as concerns were raised about the inappropriate viewing of Noah's records. Immediate steps were taken to secure the data and prevent further unauthorized access. The Trust has reported the incident to the Information Commissioner’s Office and indicated that disciplinary action will be taken where necessary.

Noah Woods, aged three, was found dead in a lake on September 16 after becoming separated from his relative while at an under-fives play area in Brantham, Suffolk. His family described him as a happy, cheeky, and playful boy who loved to laugh. He had been assessed for autism and had mild hearing loss and speech delay.

The incident follows a warning from NHS England Chief Executive Sir Jim Mackey about staff abusing patient trust by snooping on records. Mackey stated that such actions could lead to career-ending consequences and criminal records, and that suspected staff would be suspended and have their access to NHS systems cut.
