Macron to host Saudi crown prince for talks on Middle East, energy

French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for a two-day visit focused on regional stability and bilateral cooperation. The visit, commencing with the Esports World Cup closing ceremony, will also feature the inaugural meeting of the Saudi-French Strategic Partnership Council.

Discussions are expected to center on escalating Middle East tensions, including conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the Palestinians, with a view to fostering peace and stability. Both leaders aim to coordinate efforts to prevent the conflict from widening and to ensure regional security.

Several bilateral agreements are anticipated across sectors such as health, transport, energy, technology, and defense. A significant focus will be placed on diversifying transport routes and logistics, particularly exploring alternatives to the disrupted Strait of Hormuz. This includes discussions on maritime routes, pipeline projects, and regional rail initiatives.

The strategic partnership aims to strengthen political, economic, and security ties, with energy cooperation encompassing oil, gas, renewables, and emissions reduction. For Saudi Arabia, the partnership offers technology transfer and support for its Vision 2030 program, while France sees opportunities for its companies in renewable energy, civil nuclear power, and infrastructure.

Defense and aviation cooperation are also prominent, as Saudi Arabia seeks to enhance its autonomous defense industry and France aims to strengthen its strategic and commercial presence in the Gulf market.
