Key facts
- Kim Jong-un visited Dandong on Saturday.
- The visit mirrored coordination preceding summits with Donald Trump.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday. The trip echoed the intense coordination that preceded his previous summits with then-US President Donald Trump. Between March 2018 and June 2019, Kim met Chinese President Xi Jinping five times across Beijing, Dalian and Pyongyang, with three of those occasions occurring shortly before his summits with Trump. Analysts suggest that while Saturday's unannounced visit appeared superficially similar, the strategic focus had shifted.
