Karnataka plans biotech financing framework, AI focus

A significant focus for the sector's next phase of development will be on artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled biotechnology and advanced biomanufacturing. The state intends to integrate AI across various applications, including drug discovery, diagnostics, genomics, and precision medicine, thereby strengthening its position in the global innovation landscape.

Discussions at the 64th meeting of the Vision Group on Biotechnology, chaired by Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, highlighted the need for a robust state-level mechanism to support ventures at all stages. Improving engagement with venture capital firms and strategic investors is also a key objective to meet funding requirements.

Biomanufacturing has been identified as a priority, with plans to develop infrastructure that supports industrial biotechnology, advanced therapeutics, and export-oriented growth. Karnataka's IT/BT secretary, N Manjula, emphasized the government's commitment to nurturing the entire biotechnology value chain, from research and innovation to manufacturing and workforce development.

The Bengaluru Tech Summit 2026 is slated to be a platform for showcasing biotechnology startups and attracting domestic and international investment through investor engagement programs. Other areas reviewed included regulatory support, marine biotechnology, and skilling initiatives for the sector.
