Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is significantly increasing its battery production capabilities in Brazil, a move that includes a substantial investment in energy storage systems aimed at bolstering the national grid. Alexandre Baldy, senior vice president of BYD Brazil, stated that the company is committed to becoming a true Brazilian manufacturer, with a goal of reaching 50% domestic content in its vehicles by early 2027.
This expansion is part of a larger investment plan. BYD is already channeling 5.5 billion reais ($1.08 billion) into its main plant in Camaçari, Bahia, and is also increasing capacity for bus battery production. Furthermore, the company is preparing an investment of up to 500 million reais ($98 million) for a new production line dedicated to Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These systems are crucial for integrating renewable energy sources like solar and wind into Brazil's national grid, addressing issues of output absorption during peak hours.
BYD is currently evaluating whether to establish the new BESS production facility at its existing Manaus plant or construct a new site elsewhere, with a decision expected within the next 90 days. Despite holding mineral rights for lithium-rich areas in Brazil, BYD has indicated that developing these mining operations is not currently part of its strategic focus, as the company prioritizes consolidating its passenger car manufacturing and expanding electric bus capacity.
