Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi met with his Nepalese counterpart, Shisir Khanal, in New York on Monday to reaffirm Japan's support for Nepal following devastating flash floods that occurred in August. The two nations are celebrating the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations this year.
According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Motegi pledged Japan's commitment to supporting Nepal's long-term response to the disaster. This support includes emergency relief supplies and $3 million in emergency grant aid channeled through international organizations. Additionally, Japan will provide DNA testing equipment and dispatch an expert team to aid in the identification of victims.
Khanal expressed gratitude for Japan's solidarity and assistance. He also noted that Nepal is continuing its efforts to search for and rescue foreign nationals, including Japanese citizens who remain unaccounted for. A family of five from Osaka Prefecture, Japan, is among the missing following the disaster that struck on Nepal's border with China. As of September 11, the death toll had surpassed 1,400, with more than 5,000 people still unaccounted for.
