Key facts
- IRENA raised its renewable power capacity goal to 18.4 terawatts by 2035.
- Global energy demand is rising faster than previously projected.
- The share of electricity in global final energy consumption is projected to reach 35% by 2035.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has increased its renewable power capacity target to 18.4 terawatts by 2035, citing faster-than-expected global energy demand growth. IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera stated that while renewable deployment is breaking records, it remains insufficient to meet climate goals. The agency's revised 1.5°C Scenario projects electricity's share of final energy consumption to rise significantly by 2035 and 2050, supported by the expanded renewable capacity.
