India Security Concerns Rise Over Bangladesh-China Port Deal

The pact was signed during Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to China, which experts believe signals a new era in bilateral relations between the two nations. The joint statement issued after the visit highlighted several points of interest for India, including China's commitment to the Mongla Port Facilities Modernisation and Expansion Project and the development of a Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone in Chattogram. Additionally, China has pledged support for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project, a matter closely watched by India.

Earlier, India had secured operational rights to a terminal at Mongla Port under a previous administration. However, the current government's decision to partner with China on this project has intensified strategic considerations for India. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has previously stated that Dhaka does not view its foreign policy as a zero-sum game, expressing hope for a similar interpretation from other nations.
