India's Supreme Court on Monday pushed for accountability over a recent spate of rape cases in the national capital and neighboring districts, stating that they reflected a "failure of law enforcement." The court drew parallels to the 2012 Nirbhaya incident, expressing distress over recurring sexual offenses and the need to fix accountability.

The court observed that public spaces, including parks and buses, cannot become "high-risk" zones due to poor lighting, surveillance, and other basic facilities. It noted that statements of solidarity from elected representatives were insufficient and that accountability must be fixed for failures contributing to such incidents.

Hundreds of students protested in Delhi last week demanding better safety for women following reports of a teenager being gang-raped in a city park. Another incident involved a 17-year-old girl allegedly gang-raped in a moving bus. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, more than 80 rapes are reported to police daily across India.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta acknowledged lapses and vowed to improve security, while Delhi Police stated it had increased visible policing and intensified patrolling. The Supreme Court has directed its administration to file a public interest petition on the issue for the court to pursue.
