India to Supply BrahMos Missiles to Indonesia as Defense Ties Deepen

India will supply BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra air-to-air missiles to Indonesia, an Indian government official announced. The deal, valued at approximately $630 million, is set to be signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta. This agreement marks a significant expansion of India's defense exports and aims to deepen strategic ties with Indonesia, Southeast Asia's largest economy, amid increasing competition with China in the Indo-Pacific region.

The BrahMos missiles, co-developed by India and Russia, are among the fastest cruise missiles globally and can be launched from various platforms. The Astra missiles are designed for integration with Indonesian Air Force Sukhoi fighter jets. Indonesia's interest in the BrahMos system intensified after India utilized it in combat during its conflict with Pakistan. India has previously agreed to sell BrahMos missiles to Vietnam and the Philippines and has received interest from several other nations.

Prime Minister Modi's visit also includes discussions on maritime security, defense industrial cooperation, regional connectivity, and broader strategic coordination. Talks are expected to cover a phased acquisition model for the missiles, including systems, infrastructure, training, and maintenance. Bilateral trade between India and Indonesia reached $28.15 billion in 2024-25, positioning Indonesia as India's second-largest trading partner within ASEAN.
