Himalayan glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate, approaching a dangerous threshold due to expanding glacial lakes, destabilized permafrost, and a significant gap in monitoring, according to new research. The findings, released in the aftermath of devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet, highlight the growing risks from a rapidly changing Himalayan environment.
Glaciers in the region are now losing mass 65% faster than they were a decade ago, the report by global consultancy Systemiq states. However, only about 21 of the estimated 40,000 glaciers across the Himalaya-Karakoram region are being monitored in detail. This monitoring gap is critical as retreating glaciers can leave behind expanding lakes held back by unstable deposits of rock and ice, increasing the possibility of catastrophic floods.
India is already experiencing the consequences, with 18% of its land being Himalayan yet accounting for 35% of disasters. The government has identified 56 glacial lakes as 'very high risk' following a scientific assessment. The Central Water Commission monitors 2,485 glacial lakes larger than 10 hectares across India's Himalayan river basins.
The Himalayas are a vital water system for South Asia, feeding rivers that sustain hundreds of millions of people. "Peak water" is expected around mid-century in most Hindu Kush Himalayan river basins. The research estimates that Himalayan water underpins approximately 20% of India's GDP, supporting economies reliant on wheat, rice, tea, hydropower, and pilgrimage. However, the mountain states capture only about 5% of this value.
Economist Lord Nicholas Stern described the Himalayas as the "Third Pole" and warned that the ecological system is "approaching a tipping point." The report identifies black carbon pollution, largely from brick kilns, as a significant driver of glacier melt, estimating it accounts for about a third of the loss. Unlike global greenhouse gas emissions, black carbon pollution is a factor that India and its neighbours can address directly.
Systemiq's report proposes 10 priority transitions, including reducing black-carbon emissions, expanding glacier monitoring, improving disaster early-warning systems, and rethinking tourism development. Strengthening disaster preparedness and shifting tourism objectives from maximizing visitor numbers to generating retained local value are also highlighted. ICIMOD's director general, Pema Gyamtsho, emphasized that the risks are complex and do not respect national borders, necessitating cross-border monitoring, shared risk information, and joint investment in resilience.
