The official sequel to the classic 1990s space adventure RPG, The Ur-Quan Masters, has launched a free combat demo. Titled Free Stars: Children of Infinity, the demo allows players to experience the game's arcade-style space battles, reminiscent of the original's melee mode. Players can assemble a fleet from a roster of nearly 40 ships, featuring both familiar vessels from The Ur-Quan Masters and new additions, to engage in head-to-head combat against other players or AI opponents. The demo is available for download on Steam and GOG for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems. Console versions are planned for a future release. The development team includes original creators of The Ur-Quan Masters, with Lee Hutchinson, Senior Technology Editor, also contributing as a volunteer writer for NPC dialogue and story elements. Hutchinson has been involved with the project since 2021 and has written approximately 100,000 words of dialogue for seven alien species. The game's development has been extensive, spanning five years, with lead designer Dan Gerstein guiding a distributed team through a Kickstarter campaign and a prolonged development process. The combat demo offers a glimpse into the full space adventure RPG, which aims to provide a seamless continuation of the player's experience with The Ur-Quan Masters.
