The European feed industry has made advancements in its sustainability goals, according to FEFAC's 6th Feed Sustainability Charter 2030 Progress Report. The report highlights progress in climate neutrality, responsible sourcing, animal health, resource efficiency, and socio-economic resilience.

FEFAC, the European feed industry association, has released its 6th Feed Sustainability Charter 2030 Progress Report, detailing the sector's advancements toward its sustainability ambitions. The report, published on September 8, assesses progress in areas including climate neutrality, responsible sourcing, animal health and welfare, resource efficiency, and socio-economic resilience.
The report coincides with the new FEFAC Presidency and the European Commission's adoption of the EU Protein Plan and EU Livestock Strategy. FEFAC views these initiatives as crucial responses to strategic vulnerabilities within Europe's feed and food chains. Notably, the EU Protein Plan aims to increase the proportion of EU-grown oilseeds and protein crops used in domestic feed to 35% by 2035, a significant rise from the current approximate quarter.
Beyond protein crops, FEFAC highlights Europe's continued reliance on a limited number of non-EU suppliers for essential feed additives such as vitamins and amino acids, underscoring broader strategic dependencies. Key achievements from the past year mentioned in the report include progress on the GFLI Database, a symposium focused on circular feed practices, and site visits conducted for European Commissioner Christophe Hansen. Additionally, Anton van den Brink, FEFAC Deputy Secretary General, was elected Chair of the European Livestock Voice.
FEFAC President Nicolas Coudry-Mesny expressed encouragement regarding the recognition of the European agri-food and livestock sectors as strategic assets for the continent's competitiveness, resilience, and food security. He emphasized that the EU Livestock Strategy and Protein Action Plan offer a vital policy direction with a focus on practical measures to bolster food and feed chains and address strategic dependencies. Coudry-Mesny invited stakeholders to review the report as evidence of concrete actions by FEFAC members to foster a more resilient, competitive, and sustainable European livestock and aquaculture sector.
