FDA seeks scientists and consumer representatives for advisory panels

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Wednesday a nationwide initiative to recruit scientists, medical experts, and consumer representatives for its advisory committees. These committees play a crucial role in advising the agency on the approval and regulation of drugs, vaccines, and other medical products.

The agency is specifically looking for candidates to fill current and anticipated vacancies in specialized areas such as oncology, cardiovascular medicine, neurology, genetics, and medical devices. The advisory committees are composed of a diverse group of professionals, including physicians, researchers, statisticians, patient advocates, and consumer representatives, who review scientific evidence and provide independent recommendations to the FDA. While their recommendations are advisory, they carry significant weight in the regulatory process.

Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas stated that the agency is actively seeking individuals at the forefront of their respective fields. The FDA will accept nominations on an ongoing basis, with provisions for self-nominations. To expedite the process for immediate and near-term openings, a deadline of November 15 has been set for consumer representatives, and November 30 for scientific and other voting members. Members can serve terms of up to four years.

Reuters sought comment from the Department of Health and Human Services regarding the number of vacant positions and how this recruitment drive compares to previous efforts, but received no immediate response.
