The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is undergoing significant updates and beta testing for the 2027-28 cycle, with the aim of creating a more streamlined and user-friendly experience. Officials report that the new beta form is live and will be tested over the next two months by students, families, and colleges before its official launch by October 1, 2025.
Key improvements include real-time identity verification for users creating a StudentAid.gov account with a Social Security number, which will expedite the ingestion of tax information from the IRS. For those without an SSN, existing validation processes will continue. Additionally, a simplified contributor invite process will allow students to invite parents or spouses by simply entering their email, generating a unique code for acceptance, thereby reducing errors and easing the process.
Beta testing will be conducted in two rounds. Beta 1, starting August 4, will involve a limited group of school districts, community-based organizations, and higher education institutions, along with testing of Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) processing. Beta 2, beginning in late August or early September, will broaden access, allowing any student or parent to request participation via StudentAid.gov.
This initiative builds on previous beta testing efforts for the 2025-26 FAFSA form, which involved approximately 140,000 students and helped identify and fix critical issues. The Department of Education is emphasizing the importance of this beta testing phase to ensure a smooth public release.
