An AI-generated parody of the cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants has become a controversial online trend in Egypt, with users employing the character to criticize living conditions and government policies amid strict rules on dissent. The trend, which began last month on a Facebook group called "Complaints of the Residents of al-Hamour Bottom," quickly gained 1.8 million followers.
Images circulating online depicted Egypt's President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi as the money-grabbing Mr Krabs, along with scenes of overcrowded seabeds filled with tuk-tuks and schoolgirl fish being sexually harassed. Other posts raised complaints about allegedly corrupt ministers, skyrocketing rent, and the poor state of health and education.
Within weeks, the trend drew the attention of authorities. A video clip was posted online by a teenage girl claiming to be an administrator, stating that she and her fellow creators should not be held responsible for political posts made by some members in spin-off groups. Pro-government media and TV presenters accused the outlawed Islamist Muslim Brotherhood of exploiting the viral phenomenon to sow confusion.
Despite many sensitive political comments being removed, popular content continues to circulate, with celebrities and influencers adopting the theme. Rabab Kamal, an Egyptian radio presenter, noted that the laughter surrounding the trend reflects the absurdity of current circumstances. Egypt, the most populated Arab country, has experienced social and economic upheaval since the 2011 Arab Spring, with high inflation and regional instability impacting its economy. The government has also increased intolerance for public dissent.
Mahmoud Shalaby, a regional researcher at Amnesty International, stated that Egypt has long cracked down on online expression, with thousands in pretrial detention for unsanctioned views. He noted this repression extends beyond political opponents to various groups, including religious minorities and female social media creators. President Sisi has acknowledged "social media chaos" and the need for public discussions to grasp national challenges.
A lawyer has reportedly submitted a legal complaint against the "al-Hamour Bottom" content creators, calling for a review of content that satirically depicts economic conditions and decisions in a manner that could disturb public security and social order.
