Sanders, Bannon unite on AI oversight, diverge on China

Speaking at the "Pro-Human Assembly" in Washington on Tuesday, both figures voiced anxieties about the rapid advancement of AI and its potential to negatively impact society. Sanders highlighted concerns about job displacement, the creation of a "mass surveillance state," and threats to election integrity. Bannon echoed these fears, warning about the concentration of AI benefits among a few tech billionaires and advocating for a slowdown in development.

While united in their desire to curb the development of superintelligence, their proposed paths forward differ. Sanders has put forth legislation that would impose a 50% tax on the value of AI companies to establish a sovereign wealth fund and ban superintelligent AI that could escape human control. He also called for international diplomacy, suggesting President Trump negotiate a treaty with Chinese President Xi Jinping to pause advanced AI development.

Bannon, however, argued that legislative processes are too slow and pushed for President Trump to use executive action to establish a regulatory agency. He also proposed barring Chinese nationals from US universities and research labs, contrasting sharply with Sanders' call for global cooperation.
