President Trump had earlier characterized warnings about AI as a 'hoax' and resisted calls for increased regulation.

Both Trump and Bessent have framed the debate over AI regulation as a critical technology race with China. Bessent has warned that falling behind Beijing in AI development would have severe consequences for the United States. Ahead of an anticipated meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Bessent, who manages the administration's AI relationship with China, is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart, He Lifeng.
