The European Central Bank (ECB) is actively exploring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) agents and machine-to-machine (M2M) interactions into its proposed digital euro currency. Applications opened on Monday for a new phase of the ECB's digital euro innovation platform, which will run from January to June 2027. This program is divided into two tracks: one focusing on hands-on testing of payment features and another dedicated to workshops exploring future uses of the digital euro.
Participants in the experimentation track will develop prototypes for functionalities such as e-receipts, multiparty transactions, conditional payments, and novel front-end features. Concurrently, workshops will delve into AI-enabled payments, micropayments, M2M interactions, and potential applications within public services. A select group of participants will present their findings at the ECB's headquarters in Frankfurt, with the insights intended to guide future developments and use cases for the digital euro.
This initiative is separate from a previously announced 12-month pilot program, scheduled to commence in the second half of 2027, for which the ECB has already selected 36 banks and payment firms, including Revolut, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank. The potential issuance of a digital euro would still necessitate EU legislation and a subsequent decision by the ECB.
