Apple unveiled its new artificial intelligence system, dubbed Apple Intelligence, at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The new AI capabilities are set to be integrated across Apple's operating systems, including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, aiming to enhance user experience and device functionality.
Key features of Apple Intelligence include a significantly upgraded Siri, which will possess improved natural language understanding and context awareness, allowing for more conversational and helpful interactions. The system will also introduce a suite of writing tools designed to assist users with tasks such as summarizing text, proofreading documents, and adjusting the tone of written communications. Additionally, Apple announced image generation capabilities that will enable users to create visuals based on descriptive text prompts.
In a significant move, Apple revealed a partnership with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. This collaboration will allow Apple devices to access ChatGPT for more complex queries that go beyond the scope of Apple Intelligence's native capabilities, while still maintaining user privacy through on-device processing for many tasks. The company emphasized its commitment to privacy, stating that much of the AI processing will occur directly on the user's device, with cloud-based processing reserved for more demanding tasks and requiring user permission.
Apple Intelligence is slated to be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and subsequent models, as well as on Macs and iPads equipped with M-series chips. The company plans to begin rolling out these new AI features in a beta version later this year.
