Middle distillate refinery margins, including diesel crack spreads, have fallen from record highs following the G7's announcement of a coordinated release of 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel. The stock release, intended to alleviate market tightness, is seen as a short-term measure, with ongoing tensions in the Middle East continuing to pose risks to supply.

The G7's coordinated release of oil stocks aims to ease supply concerns and lower prices for refined products like diesel, impacting transportation costs and inflation. However, persistent geopolitical risks in the Middle East continue to threaten supply chains, suggesting that price pressures may not be fully resolved.
Middle distillate refinery margins, including diesel crack spreads, have declined from record highs following the G7's announcement of a coordinated release of 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel. The stock release, set to occur over the next four months, along with the reduced risk of a U.S. ban on diesel exports, has pressured the ICE gasoil crack down to approximately $70 per barrel from as high as $85 a barrel in the middle of last week, according to Warren Patterson, Head of Commodities Strategy at ING.
Crack spreads are a proxy for refinery margins, indicating the profitability of converting crude oil into petroleum products. Despite the recent drop, diesel crack spreads remain historically high, as analysts suggest the G7 stock release offers only immediate market relief and does not address the underlying tightness in middle distillate markets.
Patterson noted that a "permanent solution" would require refined products to flow again from the Persian Gulf. However, ongoing tensions in the Middle East, including an increase in attacks on commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, continue to pose risks to supply. The UK Maritime Trade Operations has reported seven strikes on vessels in the region since September 28, and a U.S. official indicated that Iran's targeting capabilities have improved, making transits through the chokepoint riskier.
