Da Nang city, Vietnam, has set an ambitious target to develop over 1GW of renewable power capacity between 2026 and 2030. This initiative includes a diverse mix of energy sources such as small hydropower, pumped-storage hydropower, utility-scale solar, rooftop solar, on- and near-shore wind, and biomass facilities.
The state utility EVN detailed the specific capacity goals, including up to 373MW of small hydropower and 300MW of pumped-storage hydropower. Solar power targets are set at 100MW for utility-scale projects and 100MW for rooftop installations. Additionally, the city plans for 100MW of wind capacity and 58MW of biomass power.
Beyond these targets, Da Nang is also committed to advancing waste-to-energy projects, with the first plant anticipated to be operational by 2026-27. The city's strategy emphasizes prioritizing renewable energy deployment in industrial zones, which have high power demand, and fostering direct power trading between generators and large consumers.
Aligning with national objectives, Da Nang aims for 50% of its government offices and households to install rooftop solar panels for self-consumption. These local targets contribute to Vietnam's broader national energy development plan, which aims for up to 38GW of wind, 73.4GW of solar, and 34.7GW of hydropower capacity by 2030. These figures represent a substantial increase from the existing capacities of 6.2GW of wind, 19.3GW of solar, and 24.7GW of hydropower recorded in 2025, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency.
