Coursera invests $100 million in co-founder Andrew Ng's new AI education firm

Andrew Ng, co-founder of the online learning platform Coursera, has launched a new artificial intelligence startup named LearnVector. The company is backed by a $100 million investment from Coursera and aims to equip white-collar workers with new skills to navigate the evolving professional landscape shaped by AI.

Ng believes that AI will not replace workers but rather enhance their productivity and create demand for new skills. LearnVector plans to leverage AI foundation models to develop individualized courses that adapt to a user's progress. The startup intends to offer these courses to corporations, governments, and higher education institutions, with the first offerings expected early next year.

Coursera's investment represents a significant bet on LearnVector, valuing the new company at approximately $300 million and accounting for about 13% of Coursera's available cash. Coursera will also partner with LearnVector to jointly develop and market courses. This move comes as companies like Amazon, Meta, and Block have cited AI-driven efficiencies for recent job cuts, though broader economic factors are also at play.
