Colombia's outgoing President Gustavo Petro has again claimed fraud in the June election, which his party lost. He alleges vote manipulation by programmers after transmission, though electoral authorities and observers have dismissed these claims. Petro's accusations could undermine the legitimacy of the incoming conservative leader, Abelardo de la Espriella.
Outgoing President Petro's persistent claims of electoral fraud, despite official dismissals, risk further polarizing Colombia's politics and could undermine the legitimacy of the incoming administration, potentially leading to civil unrest.
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Outgoing Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Monday reiterated his claims of fraud in the nation's June presidential election, which his party narrowly lost to conservative leader Abelardo de la Espriella. Petro alleged that results from thousands of tally sheets were manipulated by programmers after vote counts were transmitted to the national registrar's headquarters.
These accusations have been dismissed by international observers and Colombian electoral authorities, who declared in late June that de la Espriella, a conservative lawyer, won the election by a margin of 250,000 votes. De la Espriella is set to begin his four-year term on Friday.
Petro, a critic of the political establishment, has refused to acknowledge the election results. He accused electoral authorities of running an "obscure" election manipulated by foreign powers and stated that officials did not provide metadata for scanned tally sheets posted online. "We are facing a profound institutional problem," Petro said, calling the incoming president illegitimate.
Under Colombian law, Petro has limited recourse to prevent de la Espriella's inauguration, as the victory has been certified. However, analysts suggest Petro's claims could undermine the incoming president's legitimacy and further polarize the country's politics. Petro's ally, Ivan Cepeda, plans protests and will not recognize de la Espriella until he renounces his U.S. citizenship.
Petro also urged rural citizens to form "liberation guards" to resist military detachments he claims are allied with local mafia groups. Andres Macias, a professor at Colombia's Externado University, commented that Petro's statements might "justify the use of weapons by civilians" in conflict-affected areas.
Petro expressed concern about being "extracted" from Colombia after leaving office, stating that as a democrat, he cannot accept the alleged electoral fraud.
