Solar power has officially overtaken coal as China's largest source of electricity generation capacity, a significant milestone in the nation's renewable energy expansion. As of the end of July, China's installed solar power capacity reached 1,286 gigawatts (GW), constituting 31.5% of its total power generation capacity. This figure surpasses the 1,275 GW of coal-fired capacity recorded at the end of June.
Official data from earlier in July indicated that coal's share in China's electricity output fell below 50% for the first time in the first half of 2026. During the same period, electricity generation from renewable sources grew by approximately 9% compared to the previous year. Renewables accounted for 41.2% of China's total electricity generation in the first half of 2026, with wind and solar combined contributing nearly 25% of the total output.
Despite this achievement, China continues to rely on coal for industrial power and grid stability. Furthermore, recent policy shifts have led to a slowdown in the renewable energy boom, with grid constraints and increased coal generation resulting in higher curtailment rates for solar and wind power.
