Finnish President Alexander Stubb has revealed that China has privately assured Finland that it would prevent Russia from using nuclear weapons, a statement he believes serves as a significant deterrent against Moscow escalating the war in Ukraine.
In an interview, Stubb recounted a conversation with China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who stated that Beijing would "never allow it to happen." Stubb emphasized that this assurance provides "pretty good deterrence."
Stubb also suggested that Russia benefits from European focus on the prospect of nuclear escalation or an attack on NATO, arguing that Moscow's current strategy is more about "teasing" than preparing for direct conflict, as its troops are tied down in Ukraine and NATO's deterrence is strong.
