The US Commerce Department is collaborating with Chainlink to publish key economic statistics, including GDP and inflation data, onto public blockchains. This initiative aims to make official macroeconomic data directly accessible to blockchain applications.
This partnership marks a significant step in integrating official government economic data into the blockchain ecosystem, potentially enabling new forms of automated financial products and increasing the transparency and accessibility of macroeconomic indicators for decentralized applications.
The US Commerce Department has partnered with Chainlink to make key government economic statistics, such as GDP and inflation data, directly accessible on public blockchains. This initiative aims to integrate official macroeconomic data into blockchain applications, enabling new uses in decentralized finance and automated products.
The collaboration involves distributing data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) through Chainlink Data Feeds. Initially, the program will cover three major economic indicators: real gross domestic product, the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, and Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers. Each indicator will be available in two formats: its level and its annual rate of change. The PCE Price Index is noted as the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure, while real GDP tracks inflation-adjusted economic output and Real Final Sales measures private spending.
Chainlink will update these data feeds monthly or quarterly, mirroring the BEA's release schedule, ensuring blockchain users receive information concurrently with traditional channels. The data is initially supported across ten blockchain networks, including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Botanix, Linea, Mantle, Optimism, Sonic, and ZKsync, with the possibility of adding more networks based on demand. Chainlink functions as an oracle network, connecting blockchains to external information, thereby allowing blockchain applications to access official economic statistics without manual data transfer by developers.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick highlighted the initiative's aim to make America's economic truth immutable and globally accessible. However, the Commerce Department has also utilized other providers for different aspects of its blockchain data program, including a separate effort that placed second-quarter 2025 GDP data on networks like Bitcoin and Solana, in which Chainlink did not participate.
The availability of economic data onchain is expected to facilitate the development of automated products such as inflation-linked assets, prediction markets, and financial products that rely on macroeconomic indicators. This arrangement directly connects official government statistics with decentralized finance applications, allowing developers to build products that respond to new economic figures upon their release. Chainlink's infrastructure also supports tokenized stocks on Base, providing price feeds for DeFi applications.
