Burnham calls for Infantino to quit as FIFA president over World Cup sale plans

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has called for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign, stating that Infantino is not the right person to lead world soccer's governing body. Burnham's remarks follow the collapse of Infantino's controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup through a commercial subsidiary.

Infantino's proposal faced widespread opposition, with UEFA stating it had lost confidence in FIFA's leadership and CONCACAF asserting that FIFA leadership had "stopped putting football first." The Asian Football Confederation also opposed the plan. UEFA's 55-member nations had agreed to boycott FIFA competitions if the plans proceeded.

Despite Infantino's retreat, UEFA indicated it would collaborate with other confederations to ensure such proposals cannot happen again. The controversy has generated significant anger within the football community, with Burnham describing the plan as "offensive."
