The BBC is discontinuing several long-running radio programs, including the consumer affairs show "You and Yours," as part of a strategic shift towards digital content and podcasting, alongside significant cost-cutting measures. The corporation aims to save £500 million and reallocate investment to priority shows that can thrive across multiple platforms.
"You and Yours," which has been a staple on Radio 4 since the 1970s, is among the most high-profile casualties. Other programs ending include "Thinking Allowed," "Free Thinking," and "The Artificial Human." In contrast, "Start the Week" and "In Our Time" will be extended to an hour to bolster coverage of "ideas and technology," areas identified as having high podcast demand.
BBC's director general, Matt Brittin, has directed the broadcaster to move away from content exclusive to single platforms. The BBC Sounds director, Jonathan Wall, stated that reducing the number of commissioned programs will enable greater investment in key shows and enhance their reach on digital platforms while maintaining the strength of Radio 4 and 5 Live. The BBC acknowledged these are difficult decisions, driven by the need for savings and future investment, and pledged support for affected staff.
