Dozens die in Nigeria after inhaling toxic fumes in oil theft attempt

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC) reported that over 100 people were involved in the operation. Local reports indicate some victims fell into the Bonny River, while others were taken to hospital. The substance inhaled is locally known as 'Indorama fuel', a form of refined petrol (PMS).

The police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact figures of those affected and the circumstances surrounding the event. The NSCDC urged the public and media to rely on verified information and condemned illegal tapping activities.

Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have been long-standing issues in Nigeria's oil-rich Niger Delta region, contributing to environmental damage and economic losses. The government has intensified operations against oil theft, with the navy warning thieves that they have 'no hiding place'. Nigeria aims to increase oil production by improving security and attracting investment.
