Influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami on Saturday by the U.S. Marshals Service under a sealed warrant, as British authorities seek their extradition to face charges of rape and sex trafficking. The charges, announced by UK prosecutors, relate to alleged abuse of women between 2010 and 2017 in an area north of London where the brothers grew up.
British prosecutors stated that in addition to previously announced charges involving alleged offenses against three women, they are now bringing 38 new charges related to four additional victims. Both brothers are accused of rape and human trafficking. Andrew Tate faces an additional charge of profiting from prostitution, along with 19 charges concerning indecent images of a minor and extreme pornography.
The Tate brothers, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship, moved to Romania in 2016. They were arrested there in 2022 on accusations of participating in schemes to lure women for sexual exploitation, charges they deny. Their case in Romania did not proceed due to legal and procedural irregularities. They were permitted to leave Romania last year and traveled to Florida.
Andrew Tate, 39, first gained public attention as a contestant on the British reality show 'Big Brother' in 2016, from which he was removed after a video surfaced showing him assaulting a woman. He has amassed over 10 million followers on X but has been banned from platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram for violating hate speech guidelines. His rhetoric has included controversial statements about sexual assault victims and mental health.
Joseph McBride, a lawyer representing the Tate brothers, called the British charges "garbage and slander" and suggested they were intended to derail defamation lawsuits filed by the brothers in the U.S. He expressed confidence that the brothers would be freed once the facts are presented to a competent judge and the Department of Justice confronts what he described as an abuse of authority.
Karena Thomas, Deputy Assistant Chief of Bedfordshire Police, stated that there is no place for male violence against women and girls and that the police will continue to support victims and investigate all reports.
According to their lawyer, the Tate brothers are being held in solitary confinement.
