Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a meeting with senior Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials to review arrangements for the High-Level Committee on Demographic Changes. This committee, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2025, and formally constituted on May 26, is tasked with studying demographic shifts across the country, particularly in border areas, and recommending policy measures.
The committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar, will also visit metropolitan cities and industrial towns to assess demographic trends. Its first meeting has already occurred, and the agenda has been finalized. The MHA will provide the necessary logistical and administrative support for the committee's operations.
The panel's mandate includes examining demographic changes resulting from illegal immigration and other "unnatural causes." Its members include Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, former IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, former IPS officer Balaji Srivastava, and economist Dr Shamika Ravi. The Joint Secretary (Foreigners-I) in the MHA will serve as the committee's member secretary. The meeting also touched upon security arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin on July 3, with NSA Ajit Doval and J&K LG Manoj Sinha in attendance.
