Amazon is significantly expanding its renewable energy portfolio, particularly in Sweden, to meet the escalating power demands of its data centers and AI computing infrastructure. The company announced four new power purchase agreements (PPAs) for wind energy projects in Sweden, bringing its total carbon-free energy capacity in the country close to 1 gigawatt (GW).
These new agreements, alongside a previously announced PPA for 600 megawatts (MW) from the Gennaker offshore wind farm in Germany, underscore Amazon's commitment to powering its operations with carbon-free electricity. The Gennaker project, developed by Skyborn Renewables, is expected to power over one million German households once operational.
The four Swedish wind farms are being developed by Eolus AB and OX2 AB. With these latest deals, Amazon has now invested in a total of nine utility-scale wind energy projects in Sweden, collectively capable of powering more than 350,000 Swedish households annually.
Gulfem Toygar, country manager for Amazon Sweden, stated that these investments are part of the company's effort to bring more carbon-free energy to the grid, emphasizing the global need for energy that is carbon-free, reliable, and affordable.
The expansion comes as hyperscalers like Amazon face rapidly increasing electricity demands. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that electricity demand from data centers jumped by 17% last year, with AI-focused data centers experiencing an even steeper surge of 50%, far outpacing the 3% growth in global electricity demand.
