Blue Voice, an AI startup founded by former Harvard Law student David Lawrence, has secured $6 million in funding to expand its platform that provides real-time policy guidance to police officers. Lawrence, along with co-founders Amit Patankar and Michael Gropman, developed the tool to address the challenge officers face in recalling vast amounts of departmental rules and regulations during critical situations.
The platform, which is likened to AI tools used by legal and medical professionals, offers instant access to department-specific laws, local ordinances, and protocols. This contrasts with traditional methods like manually searching through lengthy policy manuals or relying on general AI tools like ChatGPT, which can provide inaccurate information. Blue Voice is trained on proprietary data, ensuring its responses are specific to the policies of the agencies using it.
Currently, officers in 225 county agencies across 25 states utilize Blue Voice daily. The company reports that the tool has led to concrete results, including reduced crime and fewer operational controversies. Lawrence highlighted an instance where the app helped a rookie officer identify a situation as "child enticement," granting him the authority to intervene. In another case, it reminded a chief of the requirement for a third-party mental health evaluation before returning an officer to duty after a shooting.
Blue Voice competes with Lexipol, a company backed by private equity, and has also developed features to assist detectives in solving cold cases. Lawrence expressed his hope that Blue Voice will demonstrate the public safety benefits of AI while safeguarding civil rights, especially amid growing criticism of AI use in law enforcement.
