Passenger traffic at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala has nearly doubled over the past 12 years, an official stated. The airport saw an increase from 8 lakh annual passengers in 2014 to an estimated 15 lakh for the 2025-26 fiscal year, a growth attributed to increased flight operations and the inauguration of a new terminal building.
Currently, MBB Airport handles 34 daily flights, serving approximately 5,000 passengers each day. Connectivity has expanded significantly, with flights now operating to cities such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Imphal, and Bagdogra, in addition to the previous routes to Guwahati and Kolkata. Airport Director K M Nehra highlighted the need for direct flight services to Mumbai and Chennai.
The airport has also introduced the 'DG Yatra' digital service to streamline passenger movement. Furthermore, the new terminal building is equipped for international flight operations, awaiting commencement. Regarding the Kailashahar airport, which has been closed since 1990, the Airports Authority of India has requested 20 acres of land from the state government for its expansion and to make it an all-weather facility.
