US military patrols Middle East skies as Iran deal nears finalization

US military forces are maintaining a visible presence and vigilance in the Middle East, with Central Command reporting the downing of multiple Iranian drones that were launched in an attempt to strike commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Traffic flow through the vital trade corridor remains unimpeded.

Concurrently, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that a memorandum of understanding with the United States to end the war is "never been closer," emphasizing that media speculation should cease pending finalization. President Donald Trump reposted Araghchi's statement on his Truth Social platform, though he also expressed distrust in Iran, calling them "dishonourable people to do business with" and alleging leaks of deal details.

Iranian officials, however, reject the notion that recent military actions pressured them into signing the agreement, asserting that the deal was largely agreed upon weeks ago and that recent American requests for modifications caused delays. They believe Iran will emerge from the deal with significant gains, including continued control over the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief, and the non-discussion of their missile capabilities.

Separately, the UN Security Council issued a joint statement condemning the killing of a Serbian peacekeeper from the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on June 4, following mortar fire that struck his position. The council called for a swift investigation and accountability for those responsible.

The potential US-Iran agreement, as outlined, includes a ceasefire across all fronts, a commitment to non-aggression, a mechanism for unfreezing Iranian assets, and the lifting of the blockade on the Strait of Hormuz in its first phase. The nuclear file is slated for discussion in a second phase over 60 days, with a provision to extend the ceasefire if no resolution is reached.
