Tesla Driver Using Autopilot Crashes Into Home, Killing a Woman, Officials Say

The driver, Michael Butler, told investigators he was using the vehicle's "autopilot" feature when the car left the roadway at a high rate of speed and entered the brick residence, striking Martha Avila. Avila was airlifted to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Butler, who was also taken to a hospital, reportedly showed no signs of intoxication and has been cooperating with authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed.

Photos from the scene depict significant damage to the home, with debris scattered and a large hole in the front of the structure. Avila's daughter expressed grief over the loss of her mother, noting her good health and vitality.
