North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles off its eastern coast towards the sea. South Korea's military says the first was fired from the Wonsan area at around 3pm local time. It travelled about 450 kilometres into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. A second projectile flew more than 600 kilometres from the same area. South Korea's National Security Office also convened an emergency meeting to assess the impact. Japan's defence ministry, though, has not confirmed whether the second missile landed inside the country's Exclusive Economic Zone. Tokyo has lodged a protest with Pyongyang, calling the launches a threat to regional peace and security.
